The Sound
Deftones are a band that have built their identity around
contrast. Their music can move from crushing guitars and
aggressive rhythms into atmospheric, melodic, and almost
dreamlike passages without losing its sense of identity.
Rather than staying within one specific sound, Deftones have
continually experimented with texture, emotion, and intensity.
The result is music that can feel simultaneously heavy and
beautiful, chaotic and controlled.
Formed in Sacramento, California, Deftones developed their
sound through heavy guitar-driven music, alternative rock,
atmospheric textures, and experimental production.

Selected Albums
1997
Around the Fur
Around the Fur represents one of the rawest sides of Deftones.
The album is built around aggressive guitar riffs, powerful
rhythms, and a sense of physical energy, while still leaving
room for restraint and melody.
2000
White Pony
White Pony feels like a major expansion of the band’s artistic
identity. Deftones incorporate atmosphere, electronics, melody,
and experimental arrangements alongside their heavier sound.
2010
Diamond Eyes
Diamond Eyes presents a refined version of Deftones’ sound.
The album retains the weight of their earlier work while
placing greater emphasis on melody, atmosphere, and polished
production.
2012
Koi No Yokan
Koi No Yokan continues the atmospheric direction of Diamond
Eyes while creating a darker and more immersive sound. Heavy
guitar work is balanced with spacious production and melodic
passages.

Why I Chose Deftones
I like Deftones because of the raw, in-depth connection they have
with their artistic abilities. Much of their music feels like an
exploration of contrasting emotions, combining aggressive and
heavy sounds with atmospheric and almost dreamlike moments.
I appreciate that they are not afraid to experiment with their
sound while still maintaining a recognizable identity. Their
music feels less like it was created simply to fit a genre and
more like an outlet for creativity and expression.
What interests me most is that their music does not feel like it
was created simply to fit into one genre. A song can be heavy and
aggressive one moment and then become quiet, spacious, or
emotional without feeling disconnected.
That contrast is what makes Deftones especially interesting to me
as a designer. Their use of contrast, texture, atmosphere, and
intensity can translate into typography, color, imagery, scale,
and spacing.
